Lately, much to my relief, Lulu has been devouring books. I've always sort of worried about her because she seemed to inherit Kevin's lack of interest in reading. Except for hunting magazines. She has been reading Texas Trophy Hunters since birth. She is a good reader, but she just didn't enjoy it at all. However, the last two weeks she has been through a ton of books. I've always bought her those short little books that can be finished in about 20 minutes, because that's all her attention span will allow. I've noticed lately, though, that she will lay on the couch for 30 minutes or more and just read away. I gave her some money to buy a book at the book fair and she came home with a Hannah Montana chapter book, much to my dismay. She had half of it read by the time we got home from school that day, so I figured I should pick my battles. The next day I went to the book fair and bought her and Blondie a handful of books each. Not a week later, we hit Half Price Books' 20% off sale and came home with chapter books galore for Lulu and more easy readers for Blondie. Lulu's favorites are the Junie B. Jones books and Magic Treehouse books. My cousin Jessica is getting married next weekend, so last night Lulu started reading "Junie B. Jones is Almost a Flower Girl" in honor of Jessica's wedding and the Chickies' highly regarded flower girl status. Blondie likes books about animals or princesses, or even better, animals who are princesses. Blondie hasn't mastered the whole concept of "read quietly to yourself" instead of "shouting the storyline so the whole house can hear", so she has to read on the other side of the house to avoid cat fights. So now I need to get with our builder and see if he can squeeze in some custom bookshelves in the new house. It'll be more money, but I think it's money well spent.
