Deep Thoughts

It occurs to me as I sit here listening to the classic country radio station that the tambourine is not used nearly enough in today's country music. Also? Conway Twitty has always and will always sound like a creepy pervert to me. That is all, carry on.

Quotes of the Day

From Lulu: (As she runs into the kitchen and grabs a wet paper towel) "Don't worry Mama, i'm pretty sure those markers are washable!"

From Blondie: (Randomly, in the car) "Lulu, did you know Nationwide is on your side?"

Sum-Sum-Summertime

Summer has arrived in our little corner of Texas. It's been 100+ all this week. Coincidentally, this past weekend I found out that our local park has built a (free!) splash pad. We have been there all day, every day this week. Not many people know about it, so it's not crowded. We take a big cooler filled with ice, a couple of gallons of water, our lunch, a good book (for me), and the camera, and we're good to go.

Feeling Crabby

Meet Hermie and Hermietta (names subject to change daily, or hourly sometimes.) They are turning out to actually be pretty good pets. Except for the nocturnal part. They have had to evacuate the Chickies' room because they party too loud into the wee hours of the morning. They started acting a tad depressed in the little boxes they came with, so today I found an aquarium on Freecycle and we hit Petsmart for some swanky new pieces of driftwood, a coconut house, and a glow in the dark water dish. They seem much happier now. It's really neat to just sit and watch them. Lulu's crab is a little shy and reserved, but Blondie's is very active, gets into all kinds of mischief, and bit Lulu the other day. Hmmm, sounds just like two little girls I know!

Eeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Ladies and Germs, may I introduce..... the dirt portion of our foundation!  11 dump truck loads of beautiful, top of the line dirt, expertly dispersed, packed, and leveled by a nice guy in an air conditioned backhoe with a very long haired hippy looking son to help him.

Can you guess what the little pink flags are for?

Austin!

This past weekend was my cousin Jessica's wedding in Austin. The wedding was on Friday, so we went on Thursday and stayed the entire weekend to play tourist and relax for a mini-vacation. We hung out at the hotel pool alot and I found the Chickies' new bedding at the Pottery Barn outlet in San Marcos. Here is the quilt (in a twin size):

I found pillow shams in different shades of pink with different patterns and textures to go with the quilt. I realize now that I forgot bedskirts, but I can always find something at Target or somewhere that will go with everything. We watched millions of bats fly out from under the Congress street bridge Saturday night. The girls really seemed to enjoy it and we were even entertained beforehand with a juggler who ate fire.

Peaches!

IMG_7648

New and improved with NO WORMS this year! We had three ripe ones yesterday and let me tell you, organic, home grown peaches are SO much better than store bought. Apparently we have a different variety because the meat inside is white and they are really sweet instead of tart and tangy like the ones you buy in the store. One of our trees has so many on it, the branches are almost touching the ground. I guess the peach crop is good this year because we have a neighbor kid down the road who has set up a lemonade stand to sell them. I'm going to try canning some this year. Any tips? I've only canned tomatoes in the past, so i'm not sure how to can peaches.  In other news to be filed in the "exciting" category, our survey will be completed this week! Kevin talked to Fort Worth and we think we've found a way around having to re-plat. Which means we could possibly start on the new house in two to three weeks! Eeeeee! I'll keep you updated.

Lulu the Bookworm

Lately, much to my relief, Lulu has been devouring books. I've always sort of worried about her because she seemed to inherit Kevin's lack of interest in reading. Except for hunting magazines. She has been reading Texas Trophy Hunters since birth.  She is a good reader, but she just didn't enjoy it at all. However, the last two weeks she has been through a ton of books. I've always bought her those short little books that can be finished in about 20 minutes, because that's all her attention span will allow. I've noticed lately, though, that she will lay on the couch for 30 minutes or more and just read away. I gave her some money to buy a book at the book fair and she came home with a Hannah Montana chapter book, much to my dismay. She had half of it read by the time we got home from school that day, so I figured I should pick my battles. The next day I went to the book fair and bought her and Blondie a handful of books each. Not a week later, we hit Half Price Books' 20% off sale and came home with chapter books galore for Lulu and more easy readers for Blondie. Lulu's favorites are the Junie B. Jones books and Magic Treehouse books. My cousin Jessica is getting married next weekend, so last night Lulu started reading "Junie B. Jones is Almost a Flower Girl" in honor of Jessica's wedding and the Chickies' highly regarded flower girl status. Blondie likes books about animals or princesses, or even better, animals who are princesses. Blondie hasn't mastered the whole concept of "read quietly to yourself" instead of "shouting the storyline so the whole house can hear", so she has to read on the other side of the house to avoid cat fights. So now I need to get with our builder and see if he can squeeze in some custom bookshelves in the new house. It'll be more money, but I think it's money well spent.

Weird Clouds

I took these a couple of weeks ago. They lasted about 10 minutes, then faded smooth with the sunset.
